What does “Hetachi” mean?
Exhibition Room J, where the Learning Center Hetachi is located, has a distinctive shape defined by its large, curved wall. This shape is the result of how it is cut into the Forum, the large atrium space that is one of the defining architectural features of the Aichi Arts Center.
In architecture and civil engineering, the word "hetachi" refers to oddly shaped plots of land that are sometimes left over after urban planning projects or road construction—land (“chi”) that resembles poorly (“heta”) shaped vegetables. These spaces can reveal the history of a city’s development and are often regarded as a curious and positive feature of the urban landscape.
For the Aichi Triennale 2025, the Learning Center Hetachi will embrace this tradition and transform Exhibition Room J into an engaging and interesting space.
About the Learning Center Hetachi
The sofas, partitions, and other furniture in the Learning Center Hetachi have been borrowed or donated from various locations and facilities within the Aichi Arts Center, such as the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art. These pieces are gathered here for the duration of the festival to create a comfortable, welcoming space, and will return to their original locations once the festival ends.
We hope that the Learning Center Hetachi will serve as an open environment where visitors can engage with the Aichi Triennale 2025 and feel a closer connection to the Aichi Arts Center building itself.
