This research project on "Aichi," home to the Triennale, will emphasize knowing where we are located in order to engage with the world's diversity of expression.

The project "Fugu Gakko" by Åbäke & LPPL started when a blowfish (fugu in Japanese) was mysteriously discovered off the Turkish coast in 2003.
During Aichi Triennale 2022, the Collective will unveil the Aichi-specific Fugu Gakko (2018), which originally took place in Istanbul. The goal of the workshop is to enable attendants to gain new perspectives while exploring and learning a wide range of fields such as environmental issues, geopolitics, anthropology, and contemporary art, using the blowfish as a springboard for intellectual curiosity. Through the cumulative process of discussion and research, we may end up with discussion topics that seem unrelated to a blowfish. In addition, as we learn from each other and engage in creative activities using various materials and skills, we expect the exhibition space during the Triennale to be transformed.


On the Project -- Research Leader Åbäke & LPPL (artists)

Hello! LPPL and Åbäke, in collaboration with Aichi Triennale, are looking for people who are curious to create and constitute a mini and temporary experimental Art school. We are interested in learning from each other, visiting skilled people, factories, workshops and machineries to understand what is made, how it's made, what's left over or out. In turn, we'll also make something by misusing what we've learned together!

We are looking for participants who can participate in fieldwork, research, workshops, and in events and production in preparation for presenting at Aichi Triennale 2022, alongside Research Leader Åbäke.

[Conditions of Participation]
- The main language of the "Fugu Gakko" activities will be English. Please note that there will not be an interpreter. However, not being comfortable interacting in English should not prevent you from applying.
- Age: 10 years old or older
*Please note that minors will require a parent or guardian's written consent prior to participation. Further information will be provided along with the notification of the participation decision.
- Please be prepared to cover your own expenses for transportation, meals, entrance fees to facilities, and other expenses incurred during fieldwork (including personal research).
- We will be photographing and videotaping the activities as a record. With the participants' consent, the photos and videos may be used in publicity materials and reports of Aichi Triennale 2022.
- For the activities, Aichi Triennale Organizing Committee will purchase group accident insurance, insuring the participants.

[Activity Schedule]
①Kick-off Meeting
During the kick-off meeting, we will introduce the past activities of Research Leader Åbäke and conduct an orientation about the research project for the Aichi Triennale 2022. In the second half of the meeting, we are planning on having a discussion with all the participants.

③Production Activities
During Aichi Triennale 2022 (July 30-October 10, 2022), the participants will engage in production activities using various materials discovered through research in the exhibition room on the 8th floor of the Aichi Arts Center.
*Between June 28 and July 10, an Åbäke member, Maki SUZUKI, will stay in Aichi to conduct research. There will be activities on days other than those indicated above. We will send notifications about them at a later date. Participants are encouraged to join if their schedule allows.


Åbäke & LPPL
Åbäke was established in 2000, at a time when Patrick Lacey, Benjamin Reichen, Kajsa Ståhl, and Maki Suzuki were forming the graphic design collective. Working mostly individually, they often worked collaboratively from Copenhagen, London, and Stockholm. Originally, they were all educated in visual communication and graphic design. Having mostly worked within the cultural fields of art, design, architecture, music or dance, the Collective expanded their toolkit to embrace sculpture, performance, exhibitions, writing, and workshops.
In 2021, The Fugu School Part 1 2021 was held at the Clear Gallery Tokyo in Tokyo. The Collective also jointly curated the exhibition Which Mirror Do You Want to Lick? with Sofie Dederen and Radim Peško at the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts in collaboration with students from Tokyo University of the Arts.
