ARAKAWA and Madeline Gins, who both refer to themselves as "coordinologists," meaning creators who unify philosophy, science, and art, have collaborated since the early 1960s. The Process in Question/Bridge of Reversible Destiny (1973-89) was a project to build a bridge designed by ARAKAWA and Gins over the Moselle River in the French city of Epinard, which was the first architectural work conceived by them. Although this project never came to fruition, a 1/10 scale model of the 140m long bridge was made under the supervision of ARAKAWA and Gins, and the model is included in this exhibition.

During the Aichi Triennale 2022, The Process in Question/Bridge of Reversible Destiny -- 2022 VR Version, created by a development team led by physicist and media artist Takashi Ikegami, will be open to the public for the first time in September. We will hold a celebratory pre-event to mark the premiere of the VR work. Members of Alternative Machine, led by Takashi Ikegami, and Momoyo Homma, director of ARAKAWA + Madeline Gins Tokyo Office, have been invited to talk about the development of the VR work and how the architectural project was conceived by ARAKAWA and Gins.
