The Story of the Story
From its base in the Netherlands, youth theater company Theater Artemis has produced performances in a wide range of locations both at home and abroad. Rather than being "aimed at children," their body of work constitutes an attempt at seeing the world through a child's eyes; overflowing with moments adults will find just as pleasurable as surreal, their performances never fail to incite outbursts of laughter from audiences of all ages.
Theater Artemis's long-awaited first trip to Asia follows shortly after artistic director Jetse Batelaan being awarded the Silver Lion at the International Theatre Festival at Venice Biennial 2019; absurd and indiscreet, radical and playful, his productions casually betray not only theatrical stereotypes but also normative conceptions of how theater should be enjoyed, and unleash the imaginations of audiences from every generation. This is a new type of theater, well worth seeing: created together with Het Zuidelijk Toneel (also based in the southern Netherlands), the work subtly presents the audience (laughing out loud all the while at the performance unfolding before their eyes) with a somewhat more critical perspective on modern society.
- Founded in 1990
- Based in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands
Theater Artemis is a pioneering theatre company for young audiences based in Den Bosch who perform in theatres and festivals around the Netherlands and abroad.
Theater Artemis like to seek out and experiment with new forms of theatre. They create work that offers children and young people challenging experiences that teach them to have confidence in the unknown, and in themselves. Their work is brave, anarchic, interactive and often hilarious. The company also creates innovative, independent art projects in which artists and young people collaborate.
Artistic Director, Jetse Batelaan, won the prestigious Silver Lion Award for Theatre 2019 from the Theatre Biennale in Venice in January. This is the first time that the award has been given to a theatre-maker of work for young audiences.
